Elementary, Middle School, and High School Students

Back to list of Educational Opportunities

Are you an elementary, middle school or high school student looking for information on avalanches for a report or for a project idea?   Every year we are besieged by students making requests for information about avalanches or ideas of things they can study.  Unfortunately, we don't have the time to respond to everyone's questions.  The good news is that all the information you need is out there on the web!  These links will point you in the right direction, whether you are looking for statistics about the number of people killed in avalanches each year or just some basic avalanche information.

The two main places to surf for avalanche information are:

  • Westwide Avalanche Network- www.avalanche.org
This site has links to avalanche forecast centers across the country, weather sites, avalanche accident reports and other related topics.  Check out the links to other avalanche centers in the western U.S.
  • Cyberspace Snow & Avalanche Center- www.csac.org
Another cool site, with tons of information about snow and avalanches around the world.   If you haven't been able to find enough avalanche information on the web, this site has an online store where you can purchase an avalanche book or a video.  There are many good books and videos available that should be able to help you with your projects.

One site that I looked at recently that had some good, basic avalanche information was the web page for the LaSalle Avalanche Forecast Center in Moab, Utah.  Check out their tutorial sections...
