Near Cooke City, a poor snowpack structure has been found and produced avalanches on east, south and west aspects, and makes large avalanches possible to trigger. Photo: GNFAC

"At 9,400ft, in the cirque beneath the ‘Butt Crack Couloir’ on Middle Peak we dug a pit and found:

HS:145 ECTP23 @35cm - this broke cleanly and popped out of the pit. It failed on a layer of buried surface hoar that still retained much of its crystal form.

ECTP26 @55cm - second propagation of a faceted layer on top of a 3cm ice crust. Attached picture is from the first propagation!" Photo: Chris Kussmaul

From Instagram: "Couple of small natural wind slabs around 10,200’ NE in Hyalite. Not sure exactly how recent. Played it conservative and chose to stay off a similar slope." B. Gill

From an email: "Upper Elk Creek, E. aspect, 8,200 ft Debris looked pretty fresh, Who knows, but could have been triggered either directly or remotely by bison. The disturbance to lookers left (at bench) is due to bison - they are not cryptic animals!" Photo: J. Logan Link to Avalanche Details

From an email, "... our party observed several small to medium-sized releases that occured on a heavily-loaded east aspect overnight. None stepped down in the snowpack, but they certainly could have taken a person for a ride. Overalll, stability seemed to be good, with the exception of isolated wind-loaded areas." Photo S. Reinsel

We toured up to about 7700 feet on a NE facing aspect in the N Madison, upon entering the bottom of the meadow we had several large collapses and then one very large collapse that propagated 100+ feet uphill while on lower angle terrain below the steeper terrain Of the meadow above. We dug a pit, we got an ECTP 10. The pit was 75 cm deep, we found basal facets with an ice crust on top and About 40cm of denser 3-4 finger snow above the ice crust. Photo: A. Palombo

From BSSP on 12/15: "For the 4th day in a row we triggered a persistent slab avalanche on the early November crust/facet (2mm) combo.  This time the right side of Lenin main failed w/ a 4lb shot and ran full track well past the top of Shedhorn... The slide was approx. 150’, 5’ at its deepest at the crown and resulted in a solid size 3 avalanche." From e-mail:" While on a tour in Hyalite yesterday [12/15],... On some steeper pitches near rocks bands, we observed top layer slough that moved naturally. We also observed a small crown from a day or two ago that broke between two buried rocks and only ran about 50 feet down slope." Photo: Tommy S
